The short definition
PPC is a digital advertising model where advertisers bid to show ads, and pay each time a user clicks. The most common PPC platform is Google Ads (Search), but Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, YouTube Ads and Amazon Ads all use variations of the same model.
You set a budget, define your audience or keywords, and the platform shows your ad. You pay per click – or sometimes per thousand impressions, per view, or per conversion, depending on how you set the campaign up.
How the auction works
Every time someone searches on Google or scrolls Instagram, a mini-auction runs in the background to decide which ad to show them. Two things determine who wins:
- Your bid – how much you're willing to pay per click
- Your quality – how relevant your ad, keyword and landing page are to the user
A high quality score means you can win with a lower bid. That's why good PPC isn't just about paying more – it's about making your ad and landing page genuinely relevant.
The main PPC platforms
Google Ads (Search)
Ads on Google search results. Best for capturing existing demand.
Google Ads (Performance Max)
Automated campaigns across Google's full inventory (Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Maps). Good for ecommerce and simple lead-gen.
Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram)
Interest-based and lookalike targeting. Best for creating demand and reaching buyers who don't know you yet.
LinkedIn Ads
B2B targeting by job title, industry, company. Higher CPC but better-qualified clicks for B2B.
YouTube Ads
Video-first ads. Great for brand and consideration.
Amazon Ads
For sellers on Amazon, a must.
PPC vs SEO – which is better?
Neither. They're different tools for different jobs.
PPC is fast, predictable and scalable. Turn it on – leads. Turn it off – no leads.
SEO is slow, compounding and durable. Takes 3–6 months to start, pays for years.
For most SMBs in Mumbai and Pune, the right answer is both. PPC for immediate lead flow while SEO is still warming up. Then both, running together, each feeding the other (PPC data tells you which keywords to prioritise for SEO).
What PPC costs in India
There is no universal CPC – it depends on your industry and competition. Broad ranges for Mumbai SMBs:
- Local services (plumbing, tuition, repair) – ₹8–₹40 per click
- Healthcare, dental, legal – ₹30–₹150 per click
- Real estate – ₹25–₹120 per click
- Software and SaaS – ₹50–₹300+ per click
- Finance and insurance – ₹100–₹500+ per click
Budget-wise, ₹30,000–₹1,50,000/month in ad spend is the useful range for most SMBs. Below ₹20,000/month, you don't have enough data to optimise.
How to get started with PPC
- Define the goal. Leads? Sales? Calls? Bookings?
- Set up conversion tracking. If you don't track it, you can't optimise it. GA4 + GTM + platform pixels, all wired correctly.
- Pick one platform. Usually Google Search for high-intent lead-gen, or Meta for awareness and interest-led buying.
- Build one good landing page. Not your homepage – a page designed around the ad promise.
- Launch with a capped daily budget. Watch daily for the first week.
- Optimise weekly. Kill what isn't working, scale what is.

Primary sources worth reading
Ad platforms document their own auction mechanics in public. If you are spending money on them, read the source rather than a summary of it:
- How the Google Ads auction works – Ad Rank, Quality Score and why the highest bid does not always win.
- Google Ads Quality Score – the components, and what actually moves them.
- Meta Ads delivery and auction – how Meta decides which ad a person sees.
- Conversion tracking setup – without this, everything else on this page is guesswork.
The click cost ranges in this guide come from campaigns we run for Indian SMB clients. Your own account data always beats any published benchmark.
