What digital marketing actually is
Digital marketing is any marketing activity that uses the internet or a digital device to reach a buyer. That includes search engines, social media, email, websites, mobile apps, paid ads, messaging platforms and video.
The textbook version ends there. The useful version is this: digital marketing is the collection of tools you use to get a stranger's attention, earn their trust, and turn that trust into a sale – without needing them to walk past your shop.
For a business in Mumbai or Pune, that matters for one reason. Your buyers are already researching you online before they call. If you're not there, you're already out of the running.
The main channels
Five common channels to consider are:
- Search engine optimisation (SEO)
- Pay-per-click advertising (PPC)
- Social media marketing
- Content marketing
- Email marketing
You don't need all five. Most small businesses are better off doing one or two well than five badly. The channel mix depends on who your buyer is and how they buy.
Search engine optimisation (SEO)
SEO is the work of getting your website to show up in Google when someone searches for what you sell. It has three main layers:
- Technical SEO – making your site crawlable, fast and indexable
- On-page SEO – optimising page titles, headings, content and internal links
- Off-page SEO – building authority through backlinks and brand mentions
SEO is slow to start – usually 3–6 months before you see meaningful traffic – but it compounds. A good SEO investment pays for years. Read our deeper guide on SEO →
Pay-per-click advertising (PPC)
PPC is exactly what it sounds like – you pay when someone clicks your ad. The main platforms for Indian SMBs are Google Ads (Search, Performance Max, YouTube) and Meta Ads (Facebook, Instagram).
PPC is fast. You launch a campaign today and start getting clicks today. The trade-off is that the moment you stop paying, the traffic stops. Good PPC is measured by cost-per-lead and return on ad spend – not by click volume or impressions. More on PPC →
Social media marketing
Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and (for some audiences) X and Pinterest. Social media is useful for two things: building trust with an audience that already half-knows you, and community-led word-of-mouth.
It's rarely the fastest lead generator, but it's often the cheapest way to keep existing buyers engaged and to make your brand recognisable when people research you.
Content and email marketing
Content marketing is creating articles, guides, videos and tools that answer your buyer's questions. It feeds SEO (search engines rank useful content), social (shareable), and email (subscribers want something in return).
Email marketing is the highest-ROI channel if you have a list. Welcome sequences, nurture sequences, promotional emails and transactional emails all qualify. For Indian SMBs, WhatsApp marketing is increasingly replacing traditional email in certain categories – we'll cover that separately.
How to pick your channels
Three questions:
- Where are your buyers right now? Searching on Google? Scrolling Instagram? Scanning LinkedIn? Start there.
- How fast do you need leads? Fast → PPC and social ads. Medium → social and content. Long-term → SEO and content.
- How much can you spend – total, per month, for at least six months? If the answer is "less than ₹25,000", focus on one channel, not five.
For most Mumbai SMBs, the starting mix is: SEO (long-term), plus Google Ads (fast leads). Add social and content once that foundation is producing.
How to measure results
Ignore vanity metrics. The three numbers that matter:
- Cost per lead (CPL) – what did one enquiry cost you?
- Lead-to-customer rate – how many enquiries become paying customers?
- Customer acquisition cost (CAC) – total marketing spend divided by new customers
Everything else – impressions, clicks, reach, likes – is diagnostic. Useful for understanding why CPL moved, useless on its own.

Where the numbers come from
The budget ranges in this guide are drawn from live accounts we manage for Indian small and mid-sized businesses. For the platform mechanics behind them, go to the source:
- Google Search Essentials – the organic side, documented by Google.
- Google Analytics 4 setup – you cannot judge any channel without measurement in place first.
- Google Business Profile – the single highest-return free asset for a local Indian business.
- TRAI – official Indian telecom and internet subscription data, if you need market sizing that is not a vendor blog post.
